Familiaritatea Interiorului – alternativa grandorii

Still life and the genre scene, 17th-19th centuries

The Familiarity of the Interior – the Alternative to Grandeur

The genre scenes depict the man in an everyday context, be it an aristocrat or a butcher. Protestantism was one of the catalysts that propelled this type of scene into the art of the Low Countries, although trivial scenes of ordinary people’s lives also appear in the Mediterranean area. Scenes called „bodegones” depict the lower classes of society in the intimate space of the kitchen or in the middle of a tavern, but the relationship between the human and the interior space is always emphasised.

The still life was developed almost simultaneously with the Genre Scene in the art of the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands, exploiting the bourgeoisie’s fascination with exotic flora brought from all corners of the Dutch trading empire. The apparent simplicity of the subject is often deceptive. Behind the luscious fruits and tender flowers there are often disguised ‘hidden’ messages, satirical or serious, conveyed through cryptic biblical symbolism, easily understood by the erudite commissioner of the age.
