Portretul, Secolele XVI-XIX

Apoteoza figurii umane

Portrait, 16th-19th centuries

The Apotheosis of the Human Figure

The portraiture appears in the history of art long before the Renaissance, but the philosophy of Humanism, which places the human being at the centre of creation, will transform the portrait genre into an eloquent manifest of the values of human reason. These representations may reveal the attributes, power and status of the sitter, expressing his intellectual qualities, but they are always intended to leave behind a fragment of the sitter’s personality for his successors, thus ensuring a form of perpetuation. The evolution of portraiture begins with the 16th-century Portrait of a Prince, followed by the development of Baroque and Rococo art through the portraits of Leonardo Fiovaranti and Franz Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg and ends with the 19th-century portraits of Janos Donat.
