The 19th century portrait

The confluence of Neoclassicism and Romanticism

The selection of 19th century portraits offers the possibility to perceive and understand historical figures, both known and anonymous, of the Banat bourgeoisie in relation to the Boterie of the Old Kingdom. The young woman portrayed by Theodor Aman (1831- 1891), dressed in a silk dress with a rich white lace collar, reading the Parisian magazine „La vie moderne”, seated on a sofa decorated with oriental-inspired upholstery, initiates an imaginary dialogue with the male portrait of Vilmos (Wilhelm) Mühle. Made by József Ferenczy (1866-1925), highlighting the historical personality of the royal florist who represented the gardens of the region in London, Lübeck, St. Petersburg, Antwerp and Frankfurt, Mühle laid the foundations of Roses Park from Timișoara and made history in the study and promotion of rose species. Both portraits show photographically painted figures, in a chromatic conception in which the style of Post-Impressionism is perceived. The similarities and contrasts between Parisian and Viennese painting can easily be identified in the space of this salon.
