The portrait of the people from Banat, 18th century

The Emerging Bourgeoisie

Portraits of men, women or children from the 18th century, rendered on paper, wood or canvas on a stretcher, in oil colours or oil pastels, illustrate historical images of the emerging bourgeoisie in Banat. While Prince Eugene of Savoy-Carignano liberated the fortress of Timișoara from the domination of the Ottoman Empire with the Habsburg Imperial Army in 1716, Count Claude Florimond Mercy d’Argenteau continued the campaign to mark the identity of the Banat region under the sign of the specific culture of Central Europe, under the auspices of the Habsburg Imperial Crown. Both aesthetically and in terms of fashion, the characters captured by the painters of the time follow designs from Vienna or Paris. The presence of Anselm Wagner (1731-1783), the first academically educated artist in the region, stands out for his Viennese sense of portraiture.
