Fascinația pentru mitologia greco-romană este alimentată de descoperirea moștenirii culturale a Antichității, care în Italia nu a dispărut niciodată în totalitate. Artiștii italieni sunt inspirați de culorile exuberante, de temele erotice și alegorice, de eroii antici înfățișați pe pereții vilelor de la Pompei și Herculaneum, care au fost descoperite în urma săpăturilor arheologice sistematice începând cu a doua jumătate a secolului al XVIII-lea în straturile de cenușă ale vulcanului Vesuviu. Escapadele amoroase ale zeilor vor deveni teme recurente în arta barocă, așa cum atestă operele lui Antonio Balestra, Michele Desubleo și Gregorio Lazzarini.

The fascination for Greco-Roman mythology is nourished by the discovery of the cultural legacies of Antiquity, which in Italy have never completely perished. Italian artists are inspired by the vibrant colours, the erotic and allegorical themes, the ancient heroes depicted on frescoes on the walls of the villas of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which have been revealed by extensive archaeological excavations since the second half of the 18th century through the volcanic ash layers of Mount Vesuvius. The amorous adventures of the gods would become recurrent themes in Baroque art, evidenced by the works of Antonio Balestra, Michele Desubleo and Gregorio Lazzarini.
