National Art Museum Timisoara, the first art museum in Romania finalist at the Art Museum Awards 2024
The National Museum of Art Timisoara has won the title of finalist in the international competition of European art museums, organized by European Museum Academy in collaboration with The A. G. Leventis Foundation and The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, Cyprus.
The delegation of the National Art Museum Timișoara participated at the European Museum Awards Conference (Museums EMA Annual Conference & Award Ceremony. Challenge of Change) which took place from October 3-5, 2024 in Nicosia – Cyprus.
The contribution of the National Museum of Art Timișoara was appreciated as a notable one, standing out through significant cultural programs dedicated to the community and innovative projects concentrated under the umbrella of Baroque Reloaded, relevant collections and exhibitions in a multicultural European geographic setting.
This nomination confirms the position of the National Art Museum Timișoara among the most important museum institutions in Europe and highlights its excellence in the field of art and management strategies regarding the cultural heritage promoted in the community.
Renowned as an international benchmark in assessing and recognizing outstanding merit in the museum sector, European Museum Academy placed the National Art Museum of Timișoara in the top category of museums in Europe, alongside prestigious institutions such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (Netherlands), the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts in Norwich (UK), the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin (Ireland), the Stedelijk Museum in Schiedam (Netherlands), the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp (Belgium) and the Nicosia Municipal Art Center (Cyprus). This distinction came following a rigorously prepared application by the MNArT team, followed by a visit by an evaluator appointed by European Museum Academy in Timisoara. The purpose of the visit was to confirm and document the museum’s quality and excellence in presenting, contextualizing and interpreting art and its cultural heritage. The National Museum of Art Timișoara impressed with its innovative approach, combining tradition with new exhibition techniques, visiting laboratories and creative methods of interaction with the public, joining other iconic museums that offer viable examples of integrating heritage in a contemporary dialog, thus creating valuable cultural experiences for the public.
Awards European Museum Academy are recognized as a symbol of excellence in the European museum sector, celebrating the innovation, creativity and cultural impact of the participating institutions. By being a finalist at the EMA Gala 2024, MNArT reinforces its status as a regional and European cultural leader, demonstrating once again the vital role that museums play in promoting and preserving cultural heritage.
