The National Museum of Art Timisoara, in collaboration with the Law Firm “Șerban and Associates”, the Embassy of Japan in Romania, the Cultural Association “Painter Octavian Smigelschi” and Timis County Council organizes, from January 28 to April 22, 2022, the exhibition of Japanese art “Celebrities of the Floating World 2022”.

At the beginning of 2022, our museum has the honor to host this valuable exhibition, which opens in Timisoara after a strategic national tour, in which the event was also hosted in 2021 by the National Museum of Romanian Literature in Bucharest and the Art Museum Brasov.

The approximately 150 works come exclusively from the collection of lawyer George Șerban and are created by leading Ukiyo-e artists.

Graphic techniques are presented here in their fullness. The link between image, imagination, written culture, tradition and documentation is captured by the fine lines that elegantly weave the way reality is captured and transmitted over time.

The cultural period captured in “Celebrities of the floating world 2022” is 1603-1868, known as the Edo period, a period of great openness, artistic scope, economic prosperity, social and political stability in Japanese history.

The selection of works that cohabit in the space dedicated to temporary exhibitions on the ground floor and basement of the Baroque Palace is structured with direct reference to the great themes of Japanese Edo culture, namely: history, kabuki theater, bijin-ga, poets, shunga and landscape.

The opening of the exhibition “Celebrities of the Floating World 2022” will take place on Friday, January 28, 2022, at 14:00 in the Baroque Hall of the National Art Museum Timisoara, in Unirii Square, 1.

During the opening, along with the curators Alexandru Chituță and Andreea Foanene’s speeches, there will be a guided tour of the exhibition, offered to the public by the collector George Șerban.

The exhibition can be visited from January 28 to April 22, 2022 and will be open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10.00 – 18.00.

We ask the public to respect COVID-19 disease control measures and social distancing rules during the opening and visit of the museum.

The Suppa Bar restaurant will offer traditional Japanese soup for tasting, and the Cărturești bookstore will display a selection of Japanese books and products to enrich the visitors’ experience.

The event is free to attend.
