Restoration

Home / Restoration

Hypothetically, a parallel can be drawn between restoration and medicine. Like a living organism, a work of art has a certain lifespan. The organic materials that make up the work of art undergo various structural changes, subject to the natural effect of ageing, or various physical, biological and chemical changes caused by a multitude of external factors: the microclimate of the environment, storage, handling or exposure conditions. The artist’s choice of the right materials and technique can also influence the deterioration process of a work of art. As a curative process, restoration aims to prolong the life of the work of art and to remedy the various types of deterioration that have occurred over time. Restoration aims to restore the original appearance of the artwork and prevent further damage.

If the works of art have not been kept in appropriate conditions of conservation and have suffered damage, it is necessary to apply a restoration treatment. Each artwork requires individual assessment to determine the appropriate restoration treatment. It is recommended that artwork be brought to a specialized restoration laboratory, where conservators can examine the object, perform additional analysis and investigation, and develop a customized treatment plan.

We offer artwork investigation and restoration services to public institutions, private entities and individuals. To contact us for the restoration of your artwork, please fill out the form below.

The restoration treatment is carried out by accredited restoration specialists who have solid experience and knowledge in the field. These professionals work with specific methods and materials, respecting ethical principles and international standards of conservation and restoration of artistic heritage.

The Restoration Laboratory of the National Art Museum Timișoara holds an operating license issued by the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs, with the opinion of the National Commission of Museums and Collections in 2018, for the fields of easel painting (tempera and oil) and polychrome wood painting.
